Allis Chalmers Model B
The Right Tractor
at the Right Time
In 1937, Allis Chalmers showed brilliant marketing for site and released the
Allis-Chalmers model B. Allis-Chalmers aimed the little model B at the four
million farmers that farmed 100 acres or less. Allis recognized that the
farmers on these small farms still used horses as their primary source of
farm power. When they released the Model B at the astonishing five hundred
dollar price range the stage was set for the Allis Chalmers B to become
one of the most popular tractors ever built and a true farming classic.
Allis Chalmers designed the B to be lightweight and simple. It only weighed
a ton and had a minimum of parts. However, the $495 price included such
luxuries as rubber tires and a cushioned seat. |

Allis Chalmers B Tractor
Replaces the Horse
The combination of an excellent tractor and effective marketing help the B to become a smashing success.
Allis marketing department had experience with such challenges as convincing doubting farmer the benefits of pneumatic tire. Early sales literature for the Allis Chalmers B was devoted to convincing the farmer
That the new B required less work to maintain then horses. Also armed with government supplied facts and statistics along with Allis own research proving that the new B cost less to both buy and operate them horses.

The Allis Chalmers Model B Motor
|
 |
Just like the first Allis Chalmers WC and the Model U the first model Bs were assembled with an outsourced engine.
The Waukesha Motor company factory was located in Waukesha Wisconsin and a short twelve mile train ride from the
Allis Chalmers Tractor Factory. Combining the resources between the to large and successful companies helped Allis
Chalmers research, develop and release successful tractor lines in an era that would see scores of other tractor
companies struggling to survive.
Beginning in 1938, the B had its own Allis-Chalmers designed engine; The B engine design featured overhead valves, removable
sleeves, shell bearings, and pressure oiling. The four-cylinder design would give thousands of hours of service
with nothing more then routine maintenance.

The Allis Chalmers
Standard and Special
The 1941 Allis-Chalmers brochure explains the difference in the
Standard and Special models
The standard Model "B" tractor will handle all of the jobs on the average farm
economically and efficiently. There are some conditions, however, where its
efficiency is improved by the use of special equipment, and to meet these conditions
the following special models have been made available.
For those desiring more complete equipment, there is the Model "B" Special.
It is equipped with electric lights, self-starter, radiator shutter, muffler and oversize
9-24 rear tires.
Other options available: An adjustable front axle
substituted at the factory for the standard axle added
another $19.75. The rear-mounted belt pulley and PTO shaft
came as a $35 extra.

Allis Chalmers Model B
came standard with a nonadjustable wide-front axle that was arched for added crop clearance.
Before 1940, two adjustable, arched wide-front axles were optional; one with three width settings of 38, 43, and 48
inches and another with three settings of 50, 55, and 60 inches. In 1940 the optional wide-front axles were no longer
arched, but straight and used a longer spindle drop to obtain similar crop clearance.

The influence and impact the Allis Chalmers B
had on future tractors and farming
in general is immeasurable soon after the B was introduced the small size, and high power-to-weight ratio caught the attention of Henry Ford. He had a number of Allis Chalmers new tractor on his various farms when he began working on the 9N in 1938.
Ford had already introduced many innovative ideas to the industry with the successful but outdated Fordson tractor. It is hard to deny that the success of the Allis B influenced Fords design of the small sized 9N.

AC RC 1939-1941
Created to compete with International Harvester smaller F series tractor, the Model RC tractor

Model B and Model C tractors. Introduced in 1939, the RC tractor was out of production in 1941.

ALLIS CHALMERS IB |
|

|
Allis Chalmers
announced the Model IB tractor in the 1939,
early sales literature for the "IB" Allis-Chalmers noted that it "drives like a car as it has similar
controls with a foot controlled throttle, clutch, and brake. In addition there are
individual hand brakes on each rear wheel." Lower and more compact then the standard Allis Chalmers B the IB industrial tractor made it ideal for work in small, cramped areas.
It used the same four-cylinder, 3% x 31/2 inch engine as the general
purpose Allis-Chalmers B tractor.

Allis Chalmers WD
Beginning production in 1948, the
Allis-Chalmers
WD tractor
Introduced several new design features and included the best aspects of the popular WC tractor.
The WD tractor was first to feature power-adjustable rear wheels. The rather simple device was
extremely quick and easy — so much so, that by 1959, all but one American tractor builder was
using power-adjusted rear wheels.
