In 1919 Allis-Chalmers introduced a stylish tractor with a 15 to 30 horse power rating.
Allis-Chalmers reclassified it in 1920 as the 18-30. However, within a few years production
came to a halt when the economy went into a depression. Allis-Chalmers sold only 235 of the
Model 18-30 in 1920. In 1929 the new Allis-Chalmers Model 20-35 was introduced. It was also
known as the Model E and was available for only two years.
Farm Equipment Expansion
|
|
As the roaring 20's came to an end, business began to slow as the stock market
crash of 1929 proved devastating to the Tractor manufactures.
Farm equipment companies closed their doors at a rapid
rate. Many tractor companies disappeared, but other
distressed companies were picked up by financially able
competitors for their debts or for pennies on the dollar.
Allis-Chalmers, with the purchase of the Advance-Rumely Thresher Company in 1931, continued to
expand its manufacturing capabilities to include tillage implements and harvesters. This purchase
thrust Allis-Chalmers into the position of the fourth largest farm equipment maker in the United States.

through the Cockshutt Plow Company in Canada. The price was $1,050
During the 1930s, Allis-Chalmers had a bestselling tractor
in its Models U and UC, originally developed by A-C for
a co-operative named the United Tractor and Equipment Company of Chicago, IIIinois.
By the late 1930s, Allis-Chalmers had captured 13 percent of the American tractor market.

Allis Chalmers
announced the Model IB tractor in the 1939,
early sales literature for the "IB" Allis-Chalmers noted that it "drives like a car as it has similar
controls with a foot controlled throttle, clutch, and brake. In addition there are
individual hand brakes on each rear wheel." Lower and more compact then the standard Allis Chalmers B the IB industrial tractor made it ideal for work in small, cramped areas.
It used the same four-cylinder, 3% x 31/2 inch engine as the general
